Installation on Ubuntu and Debian

Before you start

These instructions are for Ubuntu 20.04 and Debian Stable/Buster/10.9

Check if you have Java

Installing Java 11 or upgrading from an older version

  • Open your favorite command line terminal.

  • Refresh the package indexes:

    sudo apt update
    
  • Install the package:

    sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk
    
  • Check again if you now have Java 11:

    java  -version
    
  • This should display something like:

    openjdk version "11.0.10" 2021-01-19
    
  • Anything that starts with “11” or higher is good.

Check group membership for accessing your development board

    ls -l /dev/tty*

* The one to look out for will be named /dev/ttyUSB[number] or /dev/ttyACM[number]

* Usually the group it belongs to, is group 'dialout'. Check if you are a member:

    groups

* Add yourself to the 'dialout' group if you are not a member:

    sudo useradd -g dialout [your user name]

Installing AVRdude

    sudo apt install avrdude
  • Check if avrdude has been installed correctly:

    avrdude -?
    
  • That should displays the help for avrdude.

Installing BrainBuilder Development Studio

  • Download the latest version of the BrainBuilder Development Studio from the BrainBuilder Development Studio download page

  • Unzip the downloaded file to a directory of your choosing

  • In a terminal window, start run.sh

     ./run.sh
    
  • Depending on your preferences and window manager, create a shortcut or menu entry

Start creating!
