Check if you have Java

  • Type ‘cmd’ into the search bar next to the Start menu
  • Click on the Command Prompt app when it appears in the search results.
  • Type ‘java -version’ in the Command Prompt window, then press Enter.
  • Any version 11 and above is good, and you can go straight to Installing Brainbuilder

Installing Java 11 or upgrading from an older version

In these steps, we’re using Microsoft Edge. If you use a different web browser, things may look a little different.

  • Go to AdoptJDK: https://adoptopenjdk.net

  • Choose OpenJDK11, Hotspot JVM

  • Click on the “Latest Release” button

  • Save .msi file once the download has completed

  • Double-click on the downloaded .msi file to launch the installer

  • Read and accept the license agreement, and click Next

  • Custom Setup: leave the pre-selected defaults as they are, and click Next

  • A window will pop up, and ask you to agree to make changes to your computer. Click Yes
  • If you have Java applications running, you will be prompted to close the applications that have files in use
  • After setup completed, click Finish

Installing BrainBuilder

In these steps, we’re using Microsoft Edge. If you use a different web browser, things may look a little different.

  • Download the latest version of BrainBuilder from the BrainBuilder download page
  • Click on the link to start downloading BrainBuilder.zip

  • Click on Open File

  • Click on Extract, then on Extract All

  • You will be asked to select a destination where the extracted files should go. It’s a good idea to change the default

  • Choose a new destination folder by clicking Browse, or edit the name of the folder

  • The BrainBuilder software is now extracted from the Zip file and put in the folder you have chosen

  • The folder with the BrainBuilder software is shown

  • The installation part is done, you’re ready to run BrainBuilder to run for the first time

Using FireFox, the download process works like this

  • Open your Downloads folder in the Windows File Explorer
  • Right-click on BrainBuilder.zip
  • Choose ‘Unzip All’ from the menu
  • Enter the name of the folder where you want to store the BrainBuilder software
  • The installation part is done, you’re ready to run BrainBuilder to run for the first time

Running BrainBuilder for the first time

  • In the folder where you installed BrainBuilder, double-click on ‘run’. It may show up named ‘run.bat’, depending on how Windows is configured.

  • When you start BrainBuilder after a new install, a Windows Protect window will pop up. Mircosoft Defender does not recognize our app, but it is safe to run

  • Click on More Info

  • Then click on Run Anyway

  • A command window will be shown as above. This is how BrainBuilder first starts. Quickly followed by the main BrainBuilder screen

Running BrainBuilder the next times

Create a shortcut

  • Right-click on ‘run’ (or ‘run.bat’) and then click on ‘Create shortcut’
  • Drag the shortcut to you desktop
  • In future, you can start BrainBuilder by double-clicking on the desktop shortcut

From the BrainBuilder folder

  • Open the folder where you installed BrainBuilder in the Windows File Explorer
  • Double-click on the batchfile named ‘run’. It may show up named ‘run.bat’, depending on how Windows is configured.
